Teeth Whitening Q&A

Why are my teeth yellow and stained?

Teeth yellow and stain due to the natural aging process. As you get older, the outer layer of your teeth (enamel) begins to flake away. This reveals the interior of your teeth (dentin). Dentin is naturally yellow in color. The more visible it becomes, the more yellow your teeth appear.

Other factors can also contribute to tooth discoloration. Some of these factors include poor oral hygiene, using tobacco, and drinking dark-colored beverages like coffee or red wine.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry that uses FDA-approved solutions to eliminate stains and discoloration from the surface of your teeth. The majority of modern whitening treatments use carbamide peroxide, a harmless byproduct of hydrogen peroxide.

Are there different types of teeth whitening?

Dental Renaissance offers several teeth whitening options to complement their patients’ busy lifestyles.

In-office teeth whitening

In-office teeth whitening can make your teeth up to eight shades whiter in just one treatment session*. This type of teeth whitening involves your provider placing a rubber dam over your gums and tongue. Afterward, a bleaching solution is applied to the surface of your teeth.

After letting the solution sit for 10-15 minutes, your provider points a special blue light at your teeth. The blue light triggers a reaction that removes stains and discoloration. Your provider repeats this process several times until you achieve your desired results.

Take-home teeth whitening trays

Take-home teeth whitening doesn’t provide immediate results. During this type of whitening treatment, you wear a series of custom oral aligners with a bleaching solution. The bleaching solution slowly whitens your teeth, but only if you wear your aligners for 3-4 hours each day.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

The results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they do last an average of 4-6 months. If you want your teeth to stay shiny and white, make sure to brush and floss regularly and visit Dental Renaissance every six months for a professional teeth cleaning and exam.

You should also stop using tobacco and avoid drinking sodas or coffee. Additionally, you may want to avoid foods that can stain your teeth such as tomato-based pasta sauce or blueberries.

If you want a whiter, brighter smile, schedule a teeth whitening appointment at Dental Renaissance. Call the office and speak with a friendly staff member or book a consultation online today.
