Digital Dentistry Q&A

What is digital dentistry?

Digital dentistry uses advanced diagnostic tools, such as the iTero Element® digital intraoral scanner, to deliver outstanding visualization capabilities.

Traditionally, crowns, bridges, and Invisalign® aligners required taking physical impressions of your teeth with dental putty. Dental putty is messy, smelly, and sticky.

Digital dentistry provides the same high-quality molds as traditional dental putty with computerized technology. This makes the process quicker, more affordable, and convenient.

How does digital dentistry work?

Digital dentistry with the iTero Element works by scanning your teeth and gums with a 680 nm - Class 1 red laser. When combined with white LED light, this technology can record highly detailed topographical images of your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissue.

Your Dental Renaissance provider uses this information to develop dental devices like oral aligners, night guards, sports mouthguards, and other appliances. After taking digital impressions of your teeth and gums, your provider uploads them to a computer.

A special software program processes the data and translates it to a computer-aided design (CAD) format. Your provider sends the CAD data to a dental laboratory that manufactures your custom oral appliance.

What are the benefits of digital dentistry?

Digital dentistry provides an array of benefits. For one, it’s entirely free of powder or gooey impression materials. This increases patient satisfaction, improves clinical outcomes, and enhances the impression-taking process.

Additionally, dental dentistry is fast. The Itero Element allows your provider to view your scans immediately. This speed contributes to the orthodontic treatment process. You can receive your first set of Invisalign aligners much sooner than you would with traditional impressions.

Lastly, digital dentistry is accurate. Traditional molds often required follow-up appointments and the need for multiple molds. Digital dentistry requires only one scan and provides stunning results.

Is digital dentistry safe?

Digital dentistry is safe and well-tolerated. The technology that the Itero Element uses is FDA-approved and presents no risk to your gums or teeth. The machine doesn’t emit any ionic radiation either, so it’s safe for all people, including pregnant women and those with allergies.
