Oral Cancer Screenings – Plano, TX
Saving Lives with Oral Cancer Screenings
At Dental Renaissance, we take your oral health seriously and want to help you stay healthy in the long run. At each routine dental checkup and cleaning, we perform an oral cancer screening. This potentially life-saving exam is painless and usually takes only a couple of minutes to complete.
What are the signs of oral cancer?
Oral cancer can manifest in several ways, including the following:
- Lumps or bumps on the lips, gums, or other areas inside the mouth.
- Areas where the tissue has thickened or become rough.
- Difficulty swallowing.
- Chronic sore throat.
- Unexplained bleeding in the mouth.
- Unexplained numbness or pain in the face, mouth, or neck.
- Sores on the face, neck, or mouth that do not heal within two weeks.
- White, red, or speckled patches in the mouth.
- Feeling like something is stuck in the back of the throat.
What do the dentists look for in an oral cancer screening?
Our compassionate, knowledgeable dentists can identify early signs of oral cancer, including the symptoms listed above. They visually inspect your lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, throat, and mouth for any abnormalities, asymmetries, swellings, bumps, or patches of color. They may also ask you questions about your lifestyle, as some choices can increase your risk of oral cancer. If one of our dentists does find something that could indicate oral cancer, they will refer you to a medical doctor for a biopsy for confirmation.
Why is early detection of oral cancer so important?
As with many other cancers, early detection of oral can make a huge difference. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, when caught early, oral cancer has an 80 to 90 percent survival rate. That rate drops significantly for those whose cancer is diagnosed in later stages. By attending your routine dental checkup and cleaning with us every six months, you can stay one step ahead of oral cancer.
