What is TMJ disorder?

You have two TMJs located just in front of your ears at the base of your skull. These can move in all directions, making them two of the most complex joints in your body. A problem can develop when the joint or associated muscles aren’t working correctly.

What causes TMJ disorder?

When diagnosing TMJ disorder, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Common ones include unconscious teeth grinding (bruxism) or a misaligned bite that places uneven pressure on the joint.

What are the symptoms of TMJ disorder?

People can experience a TMJ disorder in many different ways, but typical symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain and tenderness
  • Pain around your ear that isn’t caused by an ear infection
  • Clicking sounds whenever you move your jaw
  • Facial pain or headaches
  • Locking of the joint that makes it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Difficulty or pain while chewing

Sometimes, these symptoms go away on their own. However, if you experience any of them for an extended period of time, you need to contact our dental office for an appointment.

Occlusal Splints

Those who grind their teeth or suffer from the symptoms of a misaligned bite will find occlusal splints to be incredibly beneficial. These custom-made oral appliances are specially-designed to fit your mouth for supreme comfort. They are typically made from an acrylic material to provide long-term durability. Their purpose is to help your jaw muscles stay aligned throughout the night so they can naturally relax and heal.
