Do you ever feel like you have too many teeth in your mouth? Then you might have overcrowded teeth. Besides being considered unattractive, it can cause health issues in your mouth and even other areas of the body. One way to fix this issue is by straightening your teeth with Invisalign. Let’s take a closer look at how Invisalign works, and what can happen if you don’t get your overcrowded teeth fixed.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Using a series of clear aligner trays custom-made by your cosmetic dentist, Invisalign moves your teeth into a straighter position in the same way that braces do. With Invisalign, however, you won’t have to worry about being called “braceface.” As the name implies, the aligners are nearly unnoticeable. In addition, they are more comfortable than metal braces, as the plastic aligners are made with your comfort in mind. Each aligner fits snugly over the teeth. You may notice some discomfort at first as your mouth gets used to the new object, but most of the time, your aligners will feel so natural that you might even forget you’re wearing them!
What Issues Can Invisalign Correct?
Besides simply misaligned teeth, Invisalign can fix issues such as:
- Overbite: upper front teeth that stick out more than lower front teeth.
- Underbite: lower front teeth that overlap with upper front teeth.
- Open bite: the top and bottom teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed.
- Crowded teeth: teeth that are too close together.
What Happens If You Don’t Correct Overcrowded Teeth?
Besides the cosmetic issues of having teeth that don’t fit together in the way you want, overcrowded teeth can cause oral health problems, such as gum disease. When your teeth are pushed too tightly together, they can become quite difficult to floss. As a result, bacteria and food particles can get stuck in between teeth, causing a gum infection that leads to gingivitis and then full-fledged gum disease if not treated. Straightening your teeth then becomes required in order to keep your teeth clean and healthy.
Overcrowded teeth can also lead to bad breath. If you can’t clean your teeth efficiently, then food gets left behind and attracts bad-breath-causing bacteria. Crowded teeth may also result in stress, both to your jaw and to your head. It can cause stress headaches from not being able to chew correctly. If your teeth and jaw aren’t aligned, neck and jaw pain could ensue.
This is why it’s important to get your overcrowded teeth fixed with Invisalign as soon as possible. Schedule a consultation with your dentist to see if Invisalign is right for you.
