You have been missing several teeth for a while now, and you’re getting sick of it. You’re tired of having all these huge gaps in your smile and not being able to enjoy your favorite foods. You’ve been considering getting dentures, but you’ve heard they cause bone loss in your jaw. Is this true? Is there a method of tooth replacement that doesn’t cause jawbone loss? Read more to find out.

Why Does Bone Loss Happen?

Every time you bite or chew, the roots of your natural teeth stimulate your jawbone. When your tooth roots are no longer there, your jawbone doesn’t receive that stimulation anymore, and it begins to shrink from disuse. According to the Indian Journal of Dentistry, up to 25 percent of the bone may be lost in the first year following tooth loss.

Unfortunately, because dentures do not replace the roots of lost teeth, they do not prevent jawbone loss. Your jawbone will continue to deteriorate, requiring your dentures to be refitted fairly often by your dentist.

Is There a Tooth Replacement Option That Does Prevent Bone Loss?

Fortunately, there is – dental implants. These small titanium posts are inserted directly into the jawbone. Over a period of a few months, the bone will actually grow around the implant until it essentially becomes a part of your own anatomy. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement method that replaces the tooth root and not just the crown. Therefore, they’re the only option that prevents bone loss.

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

If you are in good general health and are a nonsmoker, you might be a good candidate for dental implants. You also must have enough healthy jawbone left to support an implant, but if not, there’s no need to worry. You might just need to get a bone graft and recover form that before the implant surgery. The only disadvantage is that you’ll have to wait a few more months to receive your implant, but it will definitely be worth the wait.

Dentures sadly do not prevent bone loss in the jaw, but dental implants do. If you’re missing one or more teeth, contact your dentist to see if dental implants are right for you.
