A woman working on a laptop.Dental insurance in Plano helps people remove the burden of dental care costs in many different ways. When a person comes into a dental practice and thinks they have dental insurance benefits, it can be incredibly disheartening to tell them that they’ve already expired. To prevent this from happening to you, it’s crucial that you schedule now. The end of the year is almost here, so people are scheduling last-minute appointments now more than any other time of the year.

How Does Dental Insurance Work?

Insurance plans can widely vary depending on which one you have and which company you get it from. One of the most common plans is the PPO variety that comes with a set list of benefits you’re guaranteed in a given year. To keep this plan, you pay a monthly premium and pay any out of pocket expenses that come with your benefits, known as co-pays. You’re also entitled to an annual maximum, which is a set amount an insurer is guaranteed to cover up to, with the average annual maximum being about $1,250. Of course, you still need to reach a deductible before the insurer can start covering your dental costs.

It’s unfortunate, but dental insurance often goes to waste. According to a report from the National Association of Dental Plans, only 2.8 percent of people with PPO plans met or exceeded their annual maximum. Instead of leaving money on the table, now is the time to make the most out of the benefits you’re entitled too.

What’s the Best Way to Start Maximizing?

To get started, contact your dental insurance company directly and speak with a representative about your plan. You can also speak with the HR manager at your work if you get insurance through your employer. Both can provide useful information to help you decide which treatments you need to schedule. You can also confirm the balance of your annual maximum, which will help you determine how much you need to pay vs. the insurance company. Once you know your remaining benefits, schedule the same day if possible.

Which Treatments Should I Consider?

Always start with preventive treatments when maximizing insurance. Prevention is key to avoiding dental issues later in life and are typically covered anywhere between 80 to 100 percent by insurance. Companies do this because they want to make it easy for you to receive dental care, especially if it has been proven to reduce the risk of more complicated dental issues later, such as infections.

While preventive treatments like exams, cleanings, X-rays and fluoride varnishes are ideal treatments to consider first, you should also consider staggering treatment plans you previously left unfinished. These plans can be carried into the next year and you can still use your benefits, but only if you start them now.

Don’t let insurance go to waste. Schedule an appointment with a dentist in Plano today!
